His father was a barber, just like Charlie Brown's. The young Charles, or Sparky as he was nicknamed, loved reading comics, especially "Popeye" and those by Walt Disney. His talent as an artist was recognized very early in his life. His kindergarten teacher told him, "Some day, Charles, you're going to be an artist." In 1934, the Schulz family was given a black and white dog that became Charles's inspiration for "Snoopy". He sent one of his drawings of his dog to a newspaper in 1937 and it became his first published work. In 1943, at the age of 20, Schulz joined the army and fought in Europe during World War Ⅱ. In 1945, he returned home and started to work his way to becoming a cartoon artist. In 1950, Schulz got the support of a newspaper and soon Charlie Brown, Snoopy and their friends were born. The cartoon was named "Peanuts". Its popularity grew in the States. Then, gradually, the rest of the world came to know him as well. In 1965, Charlie Brown, his dog Snoopy and the rest of the "Peanuts gang" appeared on the cover of TIME magazine --- a sign of Schulz's achievement. Schulz never stopped drawing until 1999. He was suffering from ill health and had to retire. The last original "Peanuts" cartoon appeared in newspapers around the world on February 13, 2000. Schulz died in his sleep on February 12, 2000. Today, the "Peanuts" comics appear in more than 30, 000 newspapers, in 40 languages and 75 countries. Every day, more than 350 million people read about Charlie Brown, his dog Snoopy and their friends, and smile. A Timeline of Charles M. Schulz's Life 1920s On Nov 16, 1922 Charles M.
