It tries to stop major environmental problems by showing them to the world and also by directly stopping the companies or organizations that are involved in the problem. Greenpeace started in 1971 in Canada. Its first action was to try to stop a nuclear test that the US government was doing on a small island in Alaska. A group of volunteers took a small boat up to Alaska, but they were stopped and forced to return to land. The nuclear test went on, but future nuclear tests on that island were stopped. Greenpeace has continued to try to stop nuclear testing around the world. It also tries to stop things like whaling, dumping toxic waste into the oceans, and more. They succeeded in having Antarctica made into a world park, which is a place that no country can call its own.
